This is a superb Belle Époque theatre poster from the great Paris music-hall era, full of movement, colour, and theatrical excitement. Rather than presenting a single performer or a quiet portrait, Grün fills the sheet with the noise and energy of the revue itself: dancers, comic figures, uniforms, masks, feathers, ribbons, and spectators all pressing together in a composition that feels exuberant, crowded, and vividly alive.

What makes the design especially memorable is its sense of spectacle. La Cigale had opened in Montmartre in 1887 and, after its expansion in 1894, became one of the major Parisian music halls. Grün was employed exclusively by the venue from 1898 to 1902, and this poster shows him adapting his style to a larger, more elaborate production. Instead of focusing on a single central beauty, he captures the full cast and atmosphere of the performance, with Jeanne Bloch prominently featured among the revellers. The result is richer, busier, and more theatrical than many of his other cabaret images — and all the more engaging for it.

Seen today, the poster works on several levels at once. It is a document of Belle Époque Paris, a striking example of French entertainment lithography, and a large decorative work of art with real wall presence.
