Original 1939 Keep Calm and Carry On poster, issued by Britain’s Ministry of Information at the outbreak of the Second World War. This is an authentic wartime lithographic poster on paper, recently professionally linen backed, with an approximate paper size of 42.7 x 57 cm (16 3/4 x 22 7/16 inches).

Few designs have travelled so far from obscurity to icon. Created in 1939 as part of the Ministry of Information’s early wartime morale campaign, Keep Calm and Carry On was prepared for use in a grave national emergency and distributed out to local centres at the start of the war. It was then held back rather than widely displayed as originally intended, and the remaining stocks were later pulped during wartime paper salvage. That history is what gives an original example its rarity and force.

What makes a genuine wartime sheet so compelling is that it is something very different from the countless later reproductions. The familiar slogan becomes, in the original, an official object of the British Home Front: austere, restrained, and quietly powerful. Crown, typography, and red ground were not conceived as decoration, but as a message of reassurance and resolve at a moment of real uncertainty. Seen in person, the design remains one of the great exercises in twentieth-century graphic communication.

The poster only re-entered public consciousness after a surviving copy was rediscovered by booksellers in Alnwick around the turn of the twenty-first century, beginning the extraordinary afterlife that turned it into a global cultural emblem. That later fame has produced innumerable copies; authenticity is the entire point here. This is a genuine 1939 period example, not a reproduction.
