ARTIST/DESIGNER: Pierre Bonnard (1867 - 1947) was just 24 years old when he made his debut and launch into lithography and poster design with his notable FRENCH - CHAMPAGNE poster. He was a French painter, illustrator, and printmaker, known especially for the stylized decorative qualities of his paintings and his bold use of color. Toulouse - Lautrec so admired Bonnard´s work that he sought an introduction, and the two artists struck up a professional bond. Bonnard took Lautrec to Ancourt, his printer in Paris. Lautrec would later take his famous poster for the Moulin Rouge to be printed at Ancourt.

BRAND/COMPANY: This piece is one of 13 printed lithographs in the album ¨ Couverture de quelques aspects de la vie de Paris¨, printed by Auguste Clot in 1899. Le Boulevard is part of the sequence of street scenes and architectural perspectives found in this album. The dealer Ambroise Vollard issued the series for sale in 1899

STORY/DESCRIPTION: Bonnard grew increasingly interested in documenting the life of Parisians during the belle epoque/fin de siecle. In this print, Bonnard incorporated the horizontal format, vertically divided pictorial space, and raised picture plane that are commonly found in prints by Japanese artists. The Boulevard remains a moving and evocative snapshot of Parisian street life that is rendered by the distinctive hand of Pierre Bonnard.
