ARTIST/DESIGNER: Pierre Bonnard ( 1867 - 1947) was just 24 years old when he made his debut and launch into lithography and poster design with his notable FRENCH-CHAMPAGNE poster. He was a French painter, printmaker, and illustrator, known especially for the stylized decorative qualities of his paintings and bold use of color. Toulouse - Lautrec so admired his work that he sought an introduction, and the two artists struck up a professional bond over the work. Bonnard took Lautrec to Ancourt, his printers in Paris. Later, Lautrec would take his famous poster for the Moulin Rouge to be printed at Ancourt.
BRAND/COMPANY: Femme Au Parapluie ( Woman with umbrella) was one of 12 lithographs created for the publication L´Estampe Originale, a French avant-garde magazine aimed at middle class art collectors. This solitary image, of a woman on the street carrying her umbrella, is a perfect snapshot of Parisian life at the fin de siecle. Bonnard was commissioned to craft a sort of story telling album of lithographs, designed to capture the imagination of the expanding creative class taking center stage in belle epoque Paris.
STORY/DESCRIPTION: The original of the print was struck in 1895, and was published within an album of twelve prints by Bonnard under the title: L´album de la Revue Blanche¨. This lithograph, printed in 1952, was crafted at the Mourlot Freres atelier, under the supervision of Andre Sauret. It was printed with great attention to detail, and faithful to the original, by using Renage paper and the same number of strike plates in the coloring process.
